Festival Winners and Retrospect...

The festival rocked. I know that I'm meant to say that - but it's totally true. The winners are on the side here, so now I just want to blow a little smoke and thank everybody who showed up. You guys were fantastic and it was too good to meet you all.

There was a slight pinch - namely the two bum Glasgow filmmakers who didn't bother to show up (or they did - but then disappeared as soon as their movies had screened) - and that left a slight bitterness in my mouth. Maybe it's just me, but if you have an event like this on your doorstep (and your movie is screening) you should be there to support it and the work of your peers. And of course - network.

But in retrospect, I suppose that was always going to happen. I mean, one of the reasons I started this festival was to try and combat the 'victim' culture in the UK film industry. I guess it's a sad state when a filmmaker is talking to me about the 'conspiracy' at Scottish Screen to not support filmmakers, and yet, he's too concerned with going to the pub before and after his movie has screened(!) That was all I saw of the guy. So at the end of the day, whilst it's a logic that I can't understand, there were more than enough people there who had made a HUGE journey to support their work and that of others. And to those people - thank you.

And of course, to all the filmmakers from around the world who couldn't get over, thank you still for sending me your work and keeping up with the event by phone and email. I really did appreciate it, and I will keep you all updated on how things evolve. Like I say - it's as much about what happens after Bootleg as during it.

And to everybody else who emailed/called - thanks again. I know this is just one of those mad things I do, but seriously, Bootleg was a fantastic event and I'm just the guy fortunate enough to have been surrounded and inspired by so much talent.

Apologies to everybody wanting me to screen Icharus Broken. I guess it felt like the wrong thing to do, especially as I didn't want to steal the thunder from all the great movies I was showing (or be embarrassed in front of them), maybe I'll pull my finger out and get a big public screening arranged soon. Let me get some ideas together...

Also - massive thanks to Evie and the guys Offshore for putting up with the chaos. I hope to bring a one-off event to Offshore in the near future - I'm just glad you let me hold it there.

Thanks - Tom.
